The short answer
Tally is accounting software for the back office; ManuelPOS is the till, bookings and stock system for the counter, with Tally-style books built in. Most small Ghanaian businesses can run on ManuelPOS alone. A business that needs GRA E-VAT e-invoicing or full payroll today may keep Tally for the accountant.
Key takeaways
- Tally records the accounts; it is not a till for selling at the counter.
- ManuelPOS sells at the counter and posts every sale to ledgers, vouchers and a trial balance by itself.
- Tally.ERP 9 has been succeeded by TallyPrime, and TSS renewals for Tally.ERP 9 stop on 16 August 2026.
- TallyPrime, through Ghanaian partners, offers GRA E-VAT e-invoicing and payroll; ManuelPOS does not do these yet.
- If your accountant prefers Tally, ManuelPOS can still run the counter and give them clean figures.
Many Ghanaian businesses keep their accounts in Tally. Accountants learn it, and it is trusted. A common question we hear is whether a business that uses Tally also needs a POS, or whether a POS can replace Tally.
The short answer: they do different jobs. Tally is for the accounts. A POS is for selling. ManuelPOS does the selling and keeps Tally-style books from every sale, so many small businesses no longer need a separate accounts program.
Facts about Tally below come from tallysolutions.com and, where noted, from Tally's Ghanaian reseller, checked on 14 October 2026.
What is Tally built for?
TallyPrime is Tally Solutions' business management software for accounting, invoicing, inventory, banking, tax and reports. It runs on a computer, with reports also viewable in a browser.
Tally.ERP 9 was the earlier version. Tally Solutions released TallyPrime in November 2020 as its successor. Tally says Tally.ERP 9 "will continue to work", but "from 16th August 2026, TSS renewal on Tally.ERP 9 will be discontinued for all customers". TSS is the yearly service that brings updates and connected features.
On Tally's Africa pricing page, TallyPrime Silver (one computer) is a one-time purchase quoted at about USD 405, and TallyPrime Gold (several users) costs more. Both include one year of TSS, which is renewed after that. Ghanaian prices are quoted by resellers.
What does ManuelPOS do?
ManuelPOS is the system at the counter. Staff sell from a phone, tablet or laptop. It keeps selling without internet, takes Mobile Money with the transaction ID, prints or shares receipts with the 2026 GRA taxes worked out, books appointments, and tracks stock per branch. The owner sees it all from anywhere.
Behind the till, ManuelPOS keeps the books the way Tally users expect:
- Masters: ledger groups and ledgers, including your cash, bank and MoMo accounts, customers and suppliers.
- Vouchers: money received (F6), money paid (F5), contra (F4), journal (F7), sales (F8), purchase (F9), and sales and purchase returns.
- Automatic posting: every till sale, return, purchase, expense and petty cash movement becomes a voucher by itself.
- Books: day book, ledger statements, cash and bank book, trial balance and group summaries.
- Reports: profit and loss for any period, with purchases, gross profit and indirect expenses.

Which one do you need?
ManuelPOS alone suits most shops, chop bars, restaurants, salons and barbers. You get the till and the books in one place, with nothing to re-type at the end of the month.
Tally alone suits a business that does not sell over a counter, such as a distributor that invoices a few large customers, or a firm whose accountant does all the entries.
Both suit a business whose accountant already runs Tally, or that needs GRA E-VAT e-invoicing or full payroll today. ManuelPOS runs the counter, and the accountant takes the totals, the tax summary and the trial balance from ManuelPOS each month.
Moving from Tally.ERP 9
If you are on Tally.ERP 9 and wondering what to do before TSS renewals stop, you have two paths. You can upgrade to TallyPrime, which Tally offers free to customers whose TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020. Or, if Tally was mainly keeping your sales, stock and cash book, you can move that work to ManuelPOS and let the books build themselves from the till.
Start the free trial with your own products and run a week of sales. Then compare the day book and trial balance with what you would have entered in Tally.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what business owners ask us about this.
Is Tally a POS system?
No. Tally is accounting and business management software. It keeps the accounts, invoices and stock records, but it is not built as a fast till for selling at a counter. ManuelPOS is the till, with Tally-style books built in.
Is Tally.ERP 9 discontinued?
Tally says Tally.ERP 9 will continue to work, but TSS renewal for Tally.ERP 9 is discontinued for all customers from 16 August 2026. Its successor is TallyPrime, released in November 2020.
Can ManuelPOS replace Tally?
For most small shops, restaurants, salons and barbers, yes: it records every sale and posts it to ledgers, vouchers and a trial balance. If you need GRA E-VAT e-invoicing, payroll with SSNIT and PAYE, or a balance sheet today, keep Tally for those.
Does ManuelPOS use the same voucher keys as Tally?
Yes. Receipt is F6, payment F5, contra F4, journal F7, sales F8 and purchase F9, with plain-English names alongside for staff who have not used Tally.
